A Slower Way of Seeing

Find calm through the lens

A 52-week journey in mindful photography. Slow down your gaze, escape the digital rush, and rediscover the beauty of the everyday.

Delayed gratification in an instant world.

The Darkroom Principle

Our mobile app challenges the culture of instant gratification. When you capture an image using the camera, it is not displayed immediately. The image is sent to the 'Doka' (Darkroom) where it must develop for 24 hours. This shifts your focus away from immediately reviewing, deleting, and sharing the result, redirecting your awareness to the sensory experience of the moment itself.

Samples from the curriculum

Week 1 The 5-Minute Rule

“Do not take photos in the first 5 minutes.”

[CAMERA LOCK: NO FILTER] [ZOOM LOCK: STANDARD ZOOM] This week, the camera is set to a standard mode without filters or zoom. This helps you see the world as it truly is, without distractions. Use this time to ground yourself in your surroundings and appreciate the simplicity of what you genuinely see.

Tip: Inhale, exhale before you click.
Week 4 Footwork

“Where are you standing now?”

[CAMERA LOCK: HIGH ZOOM] [GRID LOCK: GRID] This week, the camera is set to high zoom and a cool minimal filter. The grid helps structure your composition as you photograph the ground beneath your feet. The square aspect ratio invites you to sharpen your focus and discover the details of texture. With dark exposure and the flash off, you can explore the subtle nuances of light and shadow. These constraints help you become aware of where you stand and see the world beneath your feet with fresh eyes.

Tip: Photograph straight from above (flatlay style).
Week 10 Black and White Thinking

“Forget all colors.”

[CAMERA LOCK: MONO FILTER] [EXPOSURE LOCK: DARK] This week, your camera is set to a black-and-white filter, with no grid and dark exposure. By forgetting color and focusing on shapes, you can see the world in a new way. These constraints help you slow down and concentrate on the essence of what you see. Let the shapes speak without the distraction of color.

Tip: Use a high-contrast (Mono) filter.
Week 12 Breathing Room

“Photograph 'nothing'.”

[CAMERA LOCK: MONO FILTER] [ZOOM LOCK: 1.0] [GRID LOCK: OFF] This week, we invite you to embrace simplicity. The camera is set to a monochrome filter to help you see the essence of light and shadow. The zoom is locked at 1.0 so you can experience the world around you in its entirety, without distraction. Let the brightness guide you to discover the subtleties of 'nothing'.

Tip: Slightly overexpose (brighten) for a light, airy effect.
